Thank you so much I knew this was going to be an uphill battle for me, but after a few attempts and failures, I’m finally at a spot where it’s on my terms, and I’m going to take back control of my mind and body once and for all. Tom – Kudos to you for the intense effort you’re being called upon to commit to your smokeless life, and to your ability to communicate the inner struggle that so many before you have faced. I’ve been smoke-free for about 25 years and Yes! even as a “lightweight” smoker of only 8 years it was a struggle. I particularly identify with the “social pariah” comment as most of my friends had quit before me. I think the final realization was when I found myself alone outside a friends house, in the cold, quickly smoking a cigarette that the light bulb clicked on in my head. Thank you so much for the comment Honestly, right now, I’m stuck in a place in my head that’s kinda swampy, in terms of momentum forward, and finding the ground beneath me. It’s kind of strange, this post-holiday, post-vacation mindset, but I know, soon, I will find my footing, and take the step forward I need to. I’m learning that life is a mix of fate and will. Fate brought me to a place where I had the opportunities before me to do something great. It’s my will that needs to catch up, and play its part.

Thanks for that reminder, mom! I know I tend to make mountains out of molehills, and you’re right, I need to just “put it out there” and trust in my work, and what I’m capable of. I need to let go of my self-doubt and worry, as I’ve learned that the biggest obstacle to my overall achievement has been, and always will be, myself. My goal is to have the essays and writing sample all squared away by the end of this month. The good thing is I’m still writing, even if it’s not for anyone else but me, and that’s helped sustain me.

I hope high summer is treating you well down under The application process is a massive one for the program I’m interested in, and it’s probably the hardest hurdle to overcome…so far. Still, every day, I wake up, I go over my responses to the questions so far, and I push myself a little further, getting a little bit closer to the core of why I want to study more. If I do that, little by little, the application essays, writing samples, plans, etc become much closer to defining who I am and what I want out of further education. That can’t be a bad thing, even if I’m not accepted.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Honestly, I find I speak exactly what I write…it’s a “conversational” sort of way of writing. I know it takes a certain filter to not give too much away on here, but over time, that filter has worn thin, and what you see is primarily what you get, both here and in person. I don’t know what I’ve done, but I’m happy it’s made you feel better, and perhaps safer, with your own personal expression. I do wish you all the very best for 2010, and that you can find a voice that soothes you, and expresses the person you truly are, whatever that may mean.

I am going through the same thought process. I have been out of work for 3 weeks due to a back injury. I to have started back on a workout routine, be it very limited. But I am feeling stronger and will add more complexity to my workout as I recover from my injury. So with all that said, I tip my hat to all who realize the importance of a healthy body and mind. Of course I have tons to say about moving to San Francisco! I certainly love it here. I won’t blather in general. All I can say is that it’s a feat! First of all I love the reward programs and I sign up for the places I like to go. I can totally understand your frustration with having to push them and believe me I have MANY stories I could share regarding horrible managers and the stupid crap they try to pull.

One of my favs was a manager who rode with me on the last job and I had to get some gas for the vehicle. I was going to be making a right turn so I pulled into the gas station on that side and was getting ready to get out to put the gas in and the manager looked over to the other gas station and the cost per gal was ONE CENT difference and he said I should go over there instead of using this one. I wanted to grab 20 cents and hand it to him and say here ya go you cheap ass but I didn’t.

I listened to this show today and I can totally relate what is going on with you and Nate. Trust me I really know what it is like to have to work and be away from your partner. For the past 2-1/2 years the only time Joe and I had was the weekend and the phone calls during the week.

Now it has changed since I lost my job and now I am home all of the time and we are having to really learn what it is like to live together as a couple. Money is also an issue and we had to make big cuts and it has created some issues. We have talked about it many times and try to be supportive in every way and that is what I would recommend you both do as well. I know this time is not good but you have to faith that you will find that teaching job and making more money.

I hope you both take the time no matter how much it is and really appreciate each other and I know you will make through this tough time. I really wish you both the very best.

I wanted to let you know that what has helped me during this tough time was a church sign that read – can’t sleep? Try counting your blessings. No matter what happens to me I am so lucky in many ways.

The movie Milk had a huge impact on me and I totally agree with you on how we have so much more to do.

I don’t really mind the rewards program stuff. I just look at them like they are crazy usually. I realize that they have to do it, and sometimes I feel a little bad because I know that management sets silly goals for them. Oh well. I’ve actually never had a person help me once in DSW. I didn’t know they did that! I think I’m just an office sort of person. I tend to like the world heavily regulated by HR and with lots of precautions about how people speak with each other to make sure they are respectful.

You also played a certain piece of music, oh that’s right, “You’re not alone.” That really takes me back. I used that song as my model for a songwriting class about 8 years ago. I say it on my podcast actually at one point, the “virus” song. Anywho, that’s random. Sorry about that.

It’s good to hear that things seemed to have smoothed out between you and Nate. It’s not always quite so easy. My partner and I have been going to couple’s therapy since February. I have to say that it’s been very helpful actually and not at all like I expected. I did want to write something in several shows ago, but it seemed like it was a little out of place.

I was wondering how quitting smoking was going too! I just quit 8 days ago (sounds like I’m in NA *shudder*), and I still have insomnia as I type at 4:47 in the morning. Okay I do sleep, but getting more than 4 hours is unusual.

BTW, your friend Matt is hot!

Oh and since you guys are veg (or was it vegan?), do you have any good lentil recipes?

You’re not alone. I hate all those rewards programs they push. I go to the store to get specific things and hate it when they keep pushing all that crap on you. I’m sure I’m not the only one. They need to know that those pushes put off customers. Sometimes I won’t return because of that crap.

You should definitely look into tutoring. Some teachers at my school make like $60 an hour. A few times a week and you’re good to go. You should offer your services at local schools. I’m sure there are parents who are looking for tutors for the summer.

I can’t run since my Knee blew out in Paris and because I’m fat The elliptical is a nice little machine that’ll kick your but into shape. It doesn’t get you outside though. You miss the wind whipping against your bald head and just generally being outside feeling like your doing something. I’ve been lifting weights and using the elliptical again for the past month and gained 2 lbs. I am also keeping my calories around 1800 so we will see if it turns around.
In regards to the smokes… You should just stop. you and Nate be Jerks for a couple weeks and at the end of a month you are done. The patch is just a placateration that will increase the chance of you hitting the smokes again…. Lots of water and vitimins to push out the bad stuff… and hit the gym.
This was a much longer comment then I meant to write. I was just going to say

I very much enjoyed the music show. I would say that Nate and I have possibly similar tastes because I knew quite a few of the songs. They were very enjoyable. In a way it was nice because it was like Nate was a part of the podcast as well. Oh rats, I’m looking at Archerr’s comment and he has some of the songs too. Been listening for ages now, but never commented. I totally agree on the student loan bit. I feel like it will never end at some point! The examination show was very familiar. Let’s just say I’ve shown up to my share of tests in pajamas. Hopefully everything went well! I just know the last test I took will hopefully be the last of its kind. Actually I can’t imagine taking a more terrifying exam. I’m always such an avid outliner when doing exams. I always get nervous when everyone else starts typing away and I haven’t even finished my outline. Anyway, also fun to hear the BT. I didn’t think that many people knew that album.
