The ramblings of Teaching Thomas, and his husband Nate, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Welcome to the New Blog

Hey All!

So I finally landed back in the United States last Wednesday, July 30th, and have taken up residence at Nate’s parent’s house in Canton, MA.

First things first, the flight was rather mundane and boring.  The only excitement came when the small amounts of turbulence kicked in.  Then, of course, I sat in my seat and watched the massive wings on the plane do a bit of flapping, and felt my stomach do a bit of flipping.  Other than that, it was a quiet ride, with only one kid a few rows back just cooing and giggling (I think the baby was under 2 yrs old), and a guy sitting next to me who didn’t say boo.  All in all, Aer Lingus was a great airline to fly, and I recommend them to anyone.  Simple, clear-cut, and none of the schmaltz you find on American or Virgin.

Now, as I have settled in a bit, I’m on the job prowl.  I’ve got about four applications out there, two in to Boston Public Schools, one in Cambridge, and one for an office job in Boston.  I also am registered to attend a recruitment event with Boston Public next Tuesday, so I’m looking forward to that.

It’s been quite an adjustment, this whole re-settling in the States.  What I’ve found, so far, is it isn’t the big adjustments that need to be made, like the time change, the type weather, or even the sounds of the birds that are part of the morning chorus.  What I’ve come up against is far more subtle, like the feeling of driving on the right-hand side of the road, or the measurement of distances (especially when I go for a walk).  I’ve been watching some television, and find myself very annoyed with commercials and advertisements, especially during the shows I like, as on the BBC, the adverts are very limited.  Also, the scale and size of vehicles, the road width, and even the distance between neighboring homes, seems to be throwing me for a bit of a curve.  I know I’ll get there, but for now, it just all feels so odd.

Right now, my A-#1 priority is to find a job.  I’ve been scouring the websites and newspapers every day since I landed, so I’m hoping to come across something soon.  I also want to get up to Maine to see my family, especially before Pennie leaves to go back to the West Coast.  I think, tentatively, Nate and I have planned on going up on Wednesday of this week, but if not, then I will be going up for the weekend ahead.  We’ll see.

Right now, I’m indulging in my first cup of coffee (yet another adjustment – it’s not instant!), and need to wake up some more.

Welcome to the new blog!

-Thom

    Hello

Really thinking you should come back now. I know it has only been a few days, but this phase you are going through needs to end, and you need to accept that King’s Lynn is the where you need to be. What more could you want??We have discounted shops, toothless pikeys, ghost hunting experiences, and Me.
